At the spring equinox, I included my graduate program cohort in my yearly, roadside, cleanup ritual. The work tangibly cleaned up a neighborhood, critiqued the myth of recycling, and took on the complexity of privilege in regards to sustainability.
As a response to the economic disparity I observed between Bloomfield Hills (one of the wealthiest townships in the US) and my current city of Pontiac, MI - a direct result of redlining policies in the Detroit metro area begun in 1939. The collective experience was a ritualistic enactment of redistributing resources; the materials collected along Pontiac roadsides were then sorted and disposed of in Bloomfield Hills which has a larger municipal budget to offer residents recycling services.
The materials were then used in a collaborative making workshop where we made participation prize ribbons out of the garbage.
